ABOUT THE ARTIST
Christiaan Nagel (b. 1982, Durban) is a South African sculptor whose practice spans a range of materials, from lightweight polyurethane to bronze. He first gained international recognition through a distinctive body of public sculptures: vividly coloured, oversized mushrooms that appear unexpectedly atop buildings and other seemingly inaccessible structures in cities around the world. More recently, Nagel has developed an expanding studio practice, working primarily in bronze while continuing to explore the sculptural possibilities of his iconic mushroom form.
At once playful, surreal and quietly subversive, Nagel’s mushrooms occupy an intriguing space between street art and contemporary sculpture. Their unexpected presence within the urban landscape creates an almost fantastical interruption of the everyday, transforming familiar architectural settings into something altogether more extraordinary. Like their natural counterparts, they seem to emerge spontaneously, taking root in unlikely places and challenging conventional perceptions of where art belongs.
The mushroom itself carries an enduring association with the mysterious and the otherworldly. Its curious forms, rapid appearance and associations with folklore, fantasy and altered perceptions lend Nagel’s sculptures an almost magical quality. Amplified by their vivid, psychedelic colour palettes, these seemingly improbable manifestations blur the boundaries between the natural and the artificial, the familiar and the surreal.
For Nagel, the mushroom has become both a recognisable artistic signature and a vehicle for an ongoing exploration of perception, imagination and the unexpected. Whether encountered high above a city street or presented as a finely crafted bronze sculpture, his work provokes curiosity and delight, inviting viewers to look beyond the ordinary and, quite literally, expand their horizons.
