ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in 1992, Nyasha Mashumba grew up in an orphanage in Harare, Zimbabwe. He later graduated from Chinhoyi Training College, specializing in Welding and Sheet Metal Work. Armed with this practical training, he moved to Cape Town in pursuit of greater opportunities and spent five years working as a welder—a period that would lay the foundation for his future as an artist.
His life took a pivotal turn when he met the late artist Mark Hilltout. Under Mark’s mentorship, Nyasha began to explore the artistic potential of industrial materials, particularly corrugated iron. What began as an apprenticeship evolved into a profound creative partnership and, ultimately, a deeply personal artistic journey.
Today, Nyasha works from his studio in Woodstock, Cape Town, where he continues to develop his own visual language. His medium—flattened corrugated iron—celebrates the overlooked beauty of the broken, the weathered, and the discarded. Car dumps, rusted edges, and sun-scorched metal fascinate him. For Nyasha, each sheet tells a story: sculpted by the elements, marked by time, and shaped by forces beyond human control.
In his studio, he keeps a meticulous library of flattened corrugated iron, sorted by hue. From these fragments, he assembles abstracted and deeply textured compositions. His works are at once raw and refined—deeply rooted in his life experiences and his mastery of a material that resists perfection.
Nyasha Mashumba is now carving out a distinct space for himself as both artist and designer, honouring the legacy of his mentor while forging a voice that is entirely his own.
