ABOUT THE ARTIST
Henk Serfontein (b. 1971) is an award-winning South African artist whose work has received widespread recognition. He has won numerous art competitions, including the prestigious New Signatures and Kanna Awards. He holds a Fine Art degree cum laude from the Tshwane University of Technology and studied at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. He has lectured at tertiary level, adjudicated national art competitions, curated exhibitions and published extensively. He is also a regular contributor on art and popular culture to Vrye Weekblad.
Serfontein first gained prominence through his hyperreal paintings of nocturnal landscapes, focusing on the marginal and transient spaces of South Africa. His abstract work similarly explores psychological and cultural landscapes, examining the tension between European artistic traditions and a more adventurous African aesthetic. Central to his practice is an ongoing exploration of identity and belonging, alongside a deep connection to the South African landscape and its intersections with culture and history.
His charcoal drawings turn towards the fragile, intimate and ethereal. In his Fragile Flora series, Serfontein depicts indigenous plants with remarkable precision, often revealing their exposed roots in intricate detail. Rendered through delicate contrasts of light and shadow, these botanical studies become portraits in their own right—imbued with dignity, sensitivity and curiosity. His meticulous marks and erasures move beyond photorealism to reveal both the underlying complexity and extraordinary beauty of the natural world.
